British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
